Obituary published by The Salt Lake City Tribune
(Rock Springs, WY, 1969 - S alt Lake City, UT, 2015)
Julie Ann Horyna died Aug. 7, 2015, at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City after suffering cardiac arrest while a patient at the hospital. She was 46.
She was born Feb. 1, 1969, in Rock Springs, Wyo., the youngest of the four daughters of John and Patricia Carricaburu. As a child, she moved with her family to Salt Lake City, where she lived until her death.
Extremely smart and capable, Julie received a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah and a master's degree from Westminster College in nursing. She worked for many years as a registered nurse and later as a nurse practitioner in trauma care at LDS Hospital and Intermountain Medical Center. She loved her work and excelled at it. She helped save hundreds of lives over the years, an accomplishment of which she was very proud.
In 1995, Julie married Tim Horyna. They later divorced. Together they had a daughter, Amaia, the joy of Julie's life.
Julie's friends and family will cherish fond memories of her straight talk, wicked sense of humor, and love of a good time. She was an avid reader and adored movies and smart television series, accumulating what must be one of Utah's largest personal DVD collections. She also loved fishing, river rafting and all types of outdoor adventure.
Julie loved her family deeply, especially her daughter, and made sure each one knew it even as she suffered through addiction that tragically defined her final years.
In addition to her daughter, Julie is survived by her parents, along with three sisters and their spouses. They are Lisa Carricaburu (Chris Maxfield), Kathleen Carricaburu (Chris Newton), and Josette Gaztambide (Marc). She is also survived by nieces and nephews Danielle and Marcel Gaztambide and Amanda and Patrick Maxfield. She is preceded in death by a nephew and godchild, Michael Maxfield.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Amaia Horyna Education Fund at Wells Fargo Bank. A private Memorial Mass will be offered in celebration of Julie's life later this week. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Starks Funeral Parlor.
