John Echeverria was born and raised in Reno, Nevada. He graduated from Reno High School in 1963, attended the University of Nevada-Reno for two years, transferred to Stanford University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Speech and Communication in 1967. After serving in the United States Air Force, he attended Hastings College of Law and received his Juris Doctorate degree in 1972.
John was a partner in the San Francisco law firm of Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Echeverria, a firm he joined in 1973 and from which he retired in 2003. He then returned to Reno and established a private practice. He specialized in successfully representing the catastrophically injured in plaintiffs’ personal injury litigation throughout the Western United States, primarily in Nevada and California. John was a member of both American Board of Trial Advocates and the American College of Trial Lawyers.
John grew up a cowboy in Reno. He and his wife have a cattle and horse ranch in Wilton, CA where he raised cutting horses for the past 36 years. John served as Area Region 2 Director for the National Cutting Horse Association for 8 years. He was the Regional Circuit Finals founder and served on the Governance and Grievance Committees for 10 years as well. John is a lifetime member of the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association where he served as Treasurer off and on for the past 10 years.
John and his siblings had a family partnership in Reno where they ran several businesses, developed property and were large supporters of the Basque community. John was a founding member of the Center for Basque Studies Advisory Board at the University of Nevada Reno and served as Chairman for many years. John was very proud of his Basque heritage.
John also served as President & CEO of his family’s restaurant, The Musso & Frank Grill in Hollywood, CA. Under John’s leadership, Hollywood’s oldest restaurant continually ranks in the top 100 restaurants in the country and just celebrated its 105th anniversary.
When not practicing law, showing horses, running businesses and selflessly serving on non-profit boards, John enjoyed traveling the world fly fishing with friends and family. John loved an adventure, going to far off waters in search of exotic fish. From Alaska and the Florida Keys to Russia, Africa, Mongolia and South America, John rarely passed up an opportunity to meet a fish.
John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cathy, his daughter Dena, and son Mark.
John will be missed by all who met him, even the fish with sore lips.
There will be a visitation at Walton’s Funerals & Cremations Sierra Chapel,
875 W. Second Street on Wednesday December 11, 2024 from 4:00-7:00 pm.
