Jesusa Madarieta, 93, passed away peacefully at her home in Burns on Aug. 18, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.
Jesusa was born Dec. 24, 1927, to Francisco and Francisca Letamendi in the small Basque village of Ibarrangelu, Viscaya, Spain.
She married Martin Madarieta on July 30, 1949 in Urkiola, Spain. In Sept. 1950, Jesusa and Martin welcomed a son (Javier) into their lives.
In search for a better life, Martin came to America. He found work with the Hines Lumber Company and moved to Burns where Jesusa and son Javier joined him in Nov. 1964.
In April 1967, Jesusa and Martin welcomed another son (Anthony) into their lives.
Jesusa was an avid gardener and knitter. She won many, many ribbons at the Harney County Fair for her lovely knitted baby clothes and numerous items from her garden. For over 20 years, she loved volunteering at the Harney County Senior Center and was recognized for her many years of service.
Jesusa is survived by her son, Javier and wife Irene Madarieta of Hines, son, Anthony and grandson Mikel Madarieta of Forest Grove, Ore.; grandson, Martin and his wife Nicole of Battle Ground, Wash.; Great-grandchildren, Ciara and Caleb Madarieta of Battle Ground, Wash.; step-grandchildren, Robert, Michael, and Royse Simpson of Burns and Jennifer Steele of Bend.
A Rosary and Mass will be held on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church, with lunch to follow in the Parish Hall.
Contributions in her memory can be made to the Harney County Hospice and the Harney County Senior Center in care of LaFollette’s Chapel, 332 West Monroe, Burns, Ore. 97720.
