Beverley Jean Echenique was born in Long Beach, CA, on August 13, 1926, to George and Ruth Cook. She died in Bakersfield on March 17th at 90 surrounded by her loving family.
Beverley moved to Bakersfield in 1930 with her family, where she attended William Penn School and Kern County Union High School. Bev loved playing cards and board games with her family and friends. Sports were very important to her, and she loved her Renegades, especially when her son was playing on the football team. Beverley enjoyed watching her grandkids excel at football, baseball and soccer as Renegades, and she never missed their events - she was proud of all their accomplishments. She also kept up with her grandson's sporting events in Truckee. The TV and radio were always on with a sporting event and Bev knew all the scores!
Beverley was an excellent seamstress and a wonderful cook at family gatherings. She enjoyed trips to her favorite vacation place, Lake Tahoe, and she had special memories of camping and boating, and her trips to Stateline. She was a proud lifetime member of the Kern County Basque Club, where she enjoyed seeing her grandkids perform as Basque dancers. She was a very generous, compassionate person who always lent a hand to those in need.
Beverley was preceded in death by husband Thomas; parents George and Ruth Cook; sister and husband June Ann and Jack Nikkel; niece Nancy Ansolabehere; nephew Don Nikkel; and brothers-in-law John and Louie Echenique. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Walker (Dennis) of Bakersfield; son Thomas, Jr. (Debby) of Truckee; nieces Marie Cuello (Jose) of Wisconsin, Helen Echenique and Betsy Hauck of Bakersfield, and Janet Alexander (Mike) of Los Osos; grandchildren Kristy Walker of Simi Valley, Brian Walker (Nikki) and Eric Walker (Stacie) of Bakersfield, Andre Echenique of San Francisco, Aimee Johns of San Ramon, Pat Johns and Cara Johns of Bakersfield; great-grandchildren Makenzie, Colton, Carson, Presly, Kadyn and Avry Walker.
Services will be held Thursday, March 23 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Francis Parish in Bakersfield. A graveside service will follow at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kern Co. Basque Club, PO Box 416, Bakersfield, Ca 93302
