Four years ago, on the second Tuesday in November of 2003 Mayor Dave Bieter got a haircut, then played a game of pala with his brother Chris. That was before voting polls closed and election results started to come in. Dave won the game and that night, he won the election. So, keeping with the good luck traditions, on the second Tuesday in November of 2007, Dave got a haircut and then he and his brother hit the fronton, again. Dave won the game and once again he won the election. He says Chris didn’t let him win and it’s proven to be a good luck charm ever since.
The democratic Mayor won by a landslide, 64 percent of the votes, and he will now hold office for a second term. His republican challenger Jim Tibbs didn’t fair as well with only 36 percent of the votes. The two already work together as Mayor and City Councilman, and that relationship will now have to continue.

This election went much smoother for Boise’s first Basque-American Mayor. Four years ago, he ran against three republicans and needed 50% of the vote to win. It was predicted that election night Boise would not have a mayor and there would have to be a run-off. But Bieter proved them all wrong and won.

And not only keeping with his pala tradition, but Bieter held his campaign party at the Basque Center, with decorations in non-other than red, white, and green.
