Steven Mayer. The Noriega House, built in 1899 on Baker Street in Bakersfield's Old Town Kern neighborhood is up for sale.

According to a listing by Watson Realty ERA agent Mike Saba, the asking price for the 4,265 square foot home is $649,900.

Saba did not immediately return a call for comment.

Described in the listing as an "iconic and spectacular Bakersfield property" and "our Kern County history on display," Saba's listing lauds the  covered front and side porch area, the lovely entryway and the large commercial-grade kitchen. Two sets of stairs lead to the second floor, the listing notes, which includes a second living area and a private office.

The property at 1325 Baker St. has extensive, landscaped grounds and even boasts a gazebo.

According to a history of the 118-year-old home on its website, the house was built for the family of Faustino Noriega, who in 1872 immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 from a small town off the northern coast of Spain, near the Pyrenees Mountains. Faustino worked for his uncle, a sheep herder, in Tulare County before becoming a successful businessman in his own right.

In 1893, Noriega partnered with another Basque immigrant, Fernando Etcheverry, and together they opened the Iberia Hotel, which would later be known as the Noriega Hotel.

That same year, according to the history, Noriega married Louisa Inda.

The couple built the Noriega House at a cost of $1,286. There they would raise their five children: Marcellena, Julia, Christine, Frank and Albert.

Direct descendants of Faustino and Louisa Noriega lived in the house and maintained the residence as recently as 1996.

In 1997 the historic residence was sold to Jerry Randall, the president of the Old Town Kern Association. The Randalls transformed the home into a historic landmark and a commercial events center within the community.

In 2007, the Tackitt family purchased the Noriega House from the Randalls. Megan Tackitt, the current owner, was not immediately available for comment.
