Jose "Joe" Marion Madarieta II, son of the late Jose and Venna Madarieta was born March 12, 1941 in Tacoma, Wash. His father was a Basque immigrant from Ispaster, Spain. Jose passed away peacefully Oct. 16, 2018 at his home in Casa Grande, Ariz., with his wife and son by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Thomas; and his sister, Margaret.
Joe grew up and spent most of his life in Oregon. He graduated from Burns Union High School where he was an accomplished athlete and attended Oregon State University. Joe moved to Portland in the 1960's where he worked for U.S. Bank. In the fall of 1970, he became a police officer and worked for the Portland Police Bureau for 25 years, retiring in January 1996.
Known as "Papa" to those who loved him, he is survived by his wife of 43 years, Hazel Madarieta; his six children, Martha Vermeire of Phoenix, Ariz., Lynn Hunter (Jerry) of Portland, Joe Madarieta of Austin, Texas; Lauren Jackson (Carla) of Portland, Diana Kruger (Mark) of Portland, and Michael Madarieta of Lexington, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
