Eleanor McMillan Hanna Acorda of Boise died March 17, 2018, at her residence of Valley View. Funeral services will be through Summers Funeral Home with services at the First Presbyterian Church, 9th and State Street, Boise.
Eleanor was born January 31, 1924, in Armoy, in the Country of Antrim, Northern Ireland, youngest of five children of Alexander and Jeannie Hanna. She attended schools in Ireland and received nurses training at Mansfield General Hospital, Nottinghamshire, England, from 1942-1946. She took further training at the City Hospital, Nottingham, and became a state certified midwife in March 1955. She was a staff midwife at the Royal Maternity Hospital, Belfast, Ireland, from March 1955 until April 1959.
Eleanor went to Canada in 1960 and worked at the University Hospital, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan for one year.
Eleanor went to Boise, where she had an aunt and cousins, late in 1960. After working at St. Luke's Hospital for one year, and for the American Red Cross for one year, she was the office nurse for Dr. George R. Baker for 20 years, retiring in 1986.
One of Eleanor's greatest accomplishments was becoming a naturalized American citizen in August of 1966.
On January 11, 1964, Eleanor married Paul Acorda in Boise. They had many happy years together, with numerous friends and relatives in the Basque community as well as Eleanor's cousins in Boise. Eleanor was known as Tia (Aunt) Irish to all of her husband's nieces/nephews and their friends- she was always ready to entertain them. She also enjoyed playing the piano and singing with the children. During Paul's last years at the Idaho State Veterans Nursing Home, Eleanor was a faithful visitor.
Eleanor was active in the Presbyterian Church. She loved the Psalms and had a keen enthusiasm for poetry, with a marvelous ability to recite English and Irish poetry from memory. She was a very caring person, and was well liked by all.
Eleanor was proceeded in death by her parents, Aunt Rose of Boise, her sisters, brother, husband, and cousins.
Eleanor is survived by cousins, and nieces and nephews both in England and Boise.
Eleanor leaves many dear friends in Boise. Memorials may be made to the Basque Center,. 601 Grove Street, Boise, ID 83702; to the Presbyterian Church, specify for homeless dinners, 950 W. State Street, Boise, ID, 83702; or to a favorite charity .
A special "Thanks" to the loving care Tia Irish received at Valley View Nursing Home, and also from All Care Hospice.
