Zuberoa sings in Eskiula to aita Martxel Tillous

04/17/2009

Xiberoa and the whole Basque Country said a touching bye last April 3rd to aita Martxel Tillous. The chaplain for 14 years of the Basque community in the US was remembered by people and messages from Ivory Coast and Africa, Paris, California and America. Xiberua sent its four most prominent traditional singers --Bordachar, Etchecopar, Bedaxagar and Arotze-- to sing a last bye to their friend. Songs like 'Herio' and 'Goizian argi hastian' got a special echo that was for sure highly appreciated by Martxel, wherever he is. The video belongs to the singing of 'Goizian argi hastian' (image EuskalKultura.com).

Touching moments at the China Euskal Etxea, in Basque bertsoak

02/23/2009

Touching moments, last February 15th at the China Basque Center in Shanghai while paying contribution and honoring Juanito Sarasola, instrumental person in the foundation of the Txinako Euskal Etxea and a promotor of the knowledge of the Basques and the Basque culture in the Asian Giant. After the delivering of the prize, the most special and touching moment came when everybody red and sang at once the 'bertsoak' that a well known bertsolaria (bertso-maker) in the Basque Country, Amets Arzallus, made up for the moment. Zorionak (congratulations), Juanito, for the prize and for all the sincere love and appreciation showed to you by all the presents [video-pictured, Estibalitz Gete, president of the China Basque Center, Juanito Sarasola, and Mikel Usandizaga, master of ceremonies; in the picture below, Estibalitz Gete, Juanito Sarasola, and Alex Arriola, member of last year's Board of Directors]

Karaoke of 'Oi zer plazera' one of the prettiest Basque songs

02/02/2009

'Oi zer plazera' is one of the prettiest and most touching songs of the Basque repertoire, that Basques of both the Basque Country and the wider diaspora sing anytime, anywhere. This nostalgic song tells us about how difficult is to remain far from the Basque Country when you love it so much. It's sung here by Erramun Martikorena, born in Baigorri (Lower Navarre) but whose mother was a Californian Basque. You can join him, following the words in the screen. It's a enjoyable experience!

Real San Sebastian 'tamborrada'... Made in the Basque Diaspora

01/16/2009

January 20th, San Sebastian day. There are many Basque communities in the world in countries and places like Barcelona, Madrid, England, Venezuela, Argentina, The United States, Mexico..., that celebrate every year the traditional 'Danborrada' or 'Tamborrada' of the Basque city of Donostia-San Sebastian, meaning playing drums following the pieces that Basque maestro Sarriegi composed especially for it. This video shows the 'danborrada' at the Argentinian town of Cañuelas (video EuskalKultura.com)

'Ixil-ixilik dago' at Udaleku 2008

10/23/2008

At Udaleku, the annual children's summer camp organized by NABO (North American Basque Organzations), boys and girls from Basque Centers all over the USA learn Euskera, basque dances and music during a fortnight in the month of June. During the day they learn and work hard; at night... let the party begin! This video was shot in a cabin in the mountains of Wyoming, where the children made some noise singing the Basque song 'Ixil-ixilik dago' (ironically, the title means 'it is very, very quiet'). Members of the 'Big Horn Basque Club' of Buffalo, organizer of 2008's Udaleku, listen to the song. In the audience is Tony Rodríguez, born in Lesaka (Nafarroa) and resident in Wyoming since the 1970's, moved by listening to his American granddaughters sing in Basque (video Joseba Etxarri-Udaleku)

07/24/2008

They are Noka, a Basque group from California. There are usually three --Andrea Bidart Oteiza, Begoña Echeverria and Cathy Petrissans-- but in this first trip to Euskal Herria only Andrea and Begoña were able to travel. They made a small tour, with recitals in Erratzu (Navarre), Larrañe (Zuberoa), Kanbo (Lapurdi) and Aldude (Lower Navarre). The images correspond to one of their themes, 'Aberriaren Mugak', recorded on July 13 (2008) in Alfaro Ostatua in Aldude (video EuskalKultura.com)
