Egunkaria Libre: 2009 Dec 15, Trial against Egunkaria begins

12/15/2009

This Tuesday, 15 of December, the trial for the Egunkaria case will begin in Madrid. The case began in February of 2003 when a judge of the Spanish National Court ordered the 'temporary' closure (it remains to this day, nearly seven years after) for the only Basque language daily newspaper, on charges of "collaborating with armed groups", arresting some of its journalists and executives. Two days after, a whole world of people jumped into the street in the city of San Sebastian to protest the closure. The trial of the case begins on Tuesday in Madrid, when even the public prosecutor withdrew the charges in 2006. The process has become an example of the excesses of a kind of war against terrorism, which confuses the defense of Euskera and nationalism with the support and allegiance to ETA.
