basque heritage worldwide
Basque bar & restaurant. Jean-Baptiste Robidart opened the Centro Basque in 1940. It originally served as a boarding house and still has four rooms for rent, but with the large dining room and diverse clientele, the only business nowadays is within the restaurant. It has its own parking area as well as pelota court. Since 1970 the Berterretche family has managed the Centro Basque. When Pierre Berterretche, born in Jatsu and raised in Irisarri, died suddenly in 1999, his wife Monique, originally from Izpura along with their California-born children Joseph, Bernadette and Jeanne took over. The Berterretche children also speak Basque. Centro Basco is the meeting place for Basques in the Chino area. Lamb is their specialty. The main room seats 238 on one side and 150 on the other with room for 200 in its banquet room.
