Bihotzetik Basque Choir Boise, ID
The Biotzetik ("from the heart") Basque Choir is the offspring of the first formal Basque Choir in Boise, Anaiak Danok ("we are all brothers"), which sang in the mid 1970s. Biotzetik (bee-oats-eh-teek) has been performing since 1986 under the directorship of Jim Anderson, Ted Totorica Jr., and Patty Gabica Haas. In 1998, Jim Anderson retired as choir director and Patty Gabica Haas took over the position. As a cultural arts group, Biotzetik has participated in the Voices W.E.S.T. Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah; Euskal Kantari Eguna in Gardnerville, Nevada; Jaialdi 1987, 1990, 1995 and 2000 in Boise, Idaho, as well as several other venues including weddings, dinners, conventions and civic functions throughout Idaho and the Northwest. After many years of planning and fundraising, the choir made its first trip to Euskal Herria in June of 2001, performing in Gernika, Ibarrangelua, Urkiola, Donibane Lohizune, and Bilbao. Their final performance in the Basque Country took place with a combined group of over 80 Basque choirs at the San Mames soccer stadium as part of the city of Bilbao´s 701st anniversary. Typically their performances include a short introduction to each musical selection, as well as a brief history of Basque music and song and information on Basque culture. Approximately 35 adults participate in the choir on a regular basis, ranging in age from mid twenties to mid sixties. The choir recorded its first album in 2000 under the title "Biotzetik, From the Heart".
