basque heritage worldwide
The Basque Educational Organization (BEO) was created in San Francisco in 1984. It is an open organization that wishes to make everyone feel welcome to be a member. Its objective is to make Basques and non-Basques, in the US, not only aware of but educated as well about Basque and Basque-American culture. Since its creation it has been working on performances and activities with different cultural aspects. Among others, it has produced the videos "Land of the Basque", "Basque Sheepherder", "The Basque Sheepherders in the West" (and a book by the same name), programs and conferences in schools and universities, Basque clubs... It has also organized Basque lessons in San Francisco and it has participated in the Pastorala (Basque popular theater) of California... On October 14, 2000, BEO organized Artzain Eguna (Sheepherder's Day) in San Francisco, where 800 people attended presentations given by William Douglass, Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe and Nancy Zubiri among others. Every year, BEO organizes different activities regarding Basque culture, mainly in San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area.
