More than 200 gathered at the Pelota Club in Chascomus to participate in the Basque Festival including Basque dancers from Cañuelas. Besides dinner and dancing, Graciela Basterra was also elected as the club’s new 'mayor' (honorary position) for 2015-2016. Chascomus also announced dates for Udaleku 2016 that will take place January 5-9.
Chascomus, Argentina. The Zingirako Euskalduank Basque club celebrated the 25th annual Euskal Jaia or Basque Festival on November 14. During the event that was held at the local Pelota Club, guests enjoyed a great menu with seafood and chicken casserole, empanadas and pintxos, along with the dance exhibition.
In regards to the dance, the hosting group Eusko Hazia performed Aurresku, Akelarre, Xiberoko Maskarada and the Fandango; while dancers from Denak Bat in Cañuelas performed Sorgin Dantza.
According to the organization, “the most exciting moments of the evening came with the election of the new club 'mayor', Graciela Basterra; and the dancing of Fandango by former dancers dedicated to the memory of Santiago Casaux.”
Upcoming activites: Olentzero and Udaleku
Looking towards the next few weeks, the Basque club in Chascomus announced, as every year in December, that they will be celebrating the Olentzero. The local community will welcome the mythic carbon maker to the club with music and dance. They have also determined the dates for next year’s Udaleku.
As Paula Berasain told EuskalKultura.com, the club have decided that Udaleku 2015 will take place on January 5-9. “As soon as we have complete information, with the whole program, we will let people know,” said the dantzari.
