Chascomus, Argentina. Following tradition established more than 20 years ago, the Zingirako Euskaldunak Basque club in Chascomus, in the province of Buenos Aires, celebrated it annual Basque festival on October 5th. The 23rd edition of the festival began at 7pm with Mass for the intention of deceased club members, at the church of Our Lady of Mercy. After mass, Pastor Claudio Munilla shared a brief message about the Basque Nation.

Following, Basque club members and friends gathered at the Club Bochistico Independiente to enjoy a dance. During the evening, various groups of the Chascomus Eusko Hazia Basque dancers took the stages as well as their colleagues from the Anaitasuna Basque Club of neighboring Maipu, special guests for the occasion. Dancers weren’t the only Basque item at the program; there was also a Basque menu provided by the club’s gastronomic group. Crafts were displayed and the euskal etxea also recognized pilotaris of he club’s pilota school.
Activities on Immigrant’s Day
The main day of the Chascomus Immigrants Day festivities took place on Sunday October 13. The community event, that included Basque club representatives, was an all-day event and provided visitors with food booths, music and dance performances, as well as a Queen Immigrant contest that was again awarded to the representative from the Laotian community.

Immigrant Day festivities started on the 6th with the presentation of the queen candidates at an event in front of the Town Hall. The Zingirako Euskaldunak club representative was Lucia Murias. On October 11, the club held a workshop where neighbors of other communities, via photos, were able to talk about the stories of their immigrant parents or grandparents. Prior to the main event, on October 12, the Children and Youth Orchestra performed at the Heart of Mary Church. Their repertoire included various songs from the various communities represented, according to Zingirako Euskaldunak.
The Zingirako Euskaldunak club also let us know that it was represented by Lorenzo Vázquez and Estanislao Alfonsín at the VIII World Sub-22 Division of Basque Pilota at the Trinkete. The tournament took place on October 13-19, in Mercedes, Uruguay.
