The Basque club began its 2015 program of activities by commemorating in separate events two important dates for the Basque community: the Day of the Basque Homeland (Aberri Eguna) and the 78th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. Besides these two events, the cub continues with its usual activity with dance, language and film.
Rosario, Argentina. On the last weekend in April, Basques in Rosario experienced some very emotional moments during their Aberri Eguna celebration as well as remembering the 78th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika. In regards to the latter, the commemoration took place on April the 26th and included a ceremony held at the Gernika Plaza. During the ceremony, club president, Carlos Ibarbia, along with the president of the Emakume Abertzale Batza, Cristina Mercado, presented a floral wreathe to the fallen at the attack that took place in the Basque village in 1937.
As part of the event, Ibarbia stressed the historic relevance of the bombing for the Basque Country, as well as for the city of Rosario given the plaza created in its memory. To close everyone presented sang Iparragirre’s verses, Gernikako Arbola, the traditional Basque anthem.
Aberri Eguna Full of Dance
During the same week, but on Saturday night, Basques held the first big taberna (gathering) of the year, this time to celebrate the Day of the Basque Homeland. Some 180 people gathered in the clubhouse “completely surpassing our expectations,” Basque clun member Luis Maria Barandeguy told EuskalKultura.com.
In addition to typical dishes, the club also provided those present with a dance performance by the txikis and other children in the Gaztedi Zutik group along with some ex-dantzaris. During the evening, the parents also got up to dance and the party lasted until midnight.
Euskera, dance and film
As every year, the Zazpi is also providing the community with a large number of activities that they can participate in. On the one hand, dance classes will be taught on Fridays at 19:30pm (txikis taught by Lorea Aguirre and Maritxu Aguirre) and on Saturdays at 6pm for members of Gaztedi Zutik).
Basque classes will take place at the Language Institute at the College of Humanities at the University of Rosario on Wednesdays from 2-4pm.
Finally the club has also announced that it has begun its 4th film series. The first function took place on April 16 with the screening of “Ocho apellidos vascos” (Eight Basque Last Names).
