Maule, Zuberoa. If filmmaking is hard, let alone in Basque, imagine what it was like making a film in the dialect of Zuberoa. That’s the adventure embarked on by the Hebentik cultural association five years ago, after falling in love with the script by Peio Cachenaut, and being convinced that it was time to shake up the cultural landscape of Zuberoa with modern and ambitious projects. Now, finally, the fruit of these years of effort can be seen on the big screen at its official premier at Maule’s theater at 21:00. Remember that just 13.000 people live in Zuberoa.
The project has managed to unite many associations and individuals from Zuberoa who have contributed their bit in the spirit of “auzolan” or first neighbor work. This Xora, the title (madness in Basque) has become the passion of many people in the area as well as professionals in the world of cinema in Hegoalde such as the producer Baleuko and distributor Barton Films also joined in the project. That is why the film has already been distributed in Hegoalde, but not yet in Iparralde. Those working in distribution now have to go to Paris, as explained by Mixel Etxekopar of Hebentik.
Subtitles in Batua
Its premier in theaters will be delayed until distribution in Iparralde has been confirmed since producers want it released at the same time throughout the Basque Country. With this goal in mind, they have included subtitles in French, Spanish and also in Batua or unified Basque. “Our idea is for the film to be seen in its original version, we didn’t want it dubbed, because it is really wonderful to hear Zubero Basque in a theater,” Etxekopar explained to EuskalKultura.com.
It will also be subtitled in English and Etxekopar would like it to be shown in the Diaspora, with which he has a close relationship. “I know that in San Francisco, for example, they have a Basque film series and it would be wonderful to have it shown there,” he commented. There are also a great number of Basques from Zuberoa there who will be able to understand the film in its original version. Nevertheless, thanks to it being subtitled, it could be seen in practically all of the Basque clubs worldwide.
