The school named after Dr. Nelson Vigo, World Xare Runner up in 1952, will be located at the Trinketa at the Circulo Sportivo in Salto, the birth place of many great pelotaris.  The school’s opening was attended by Argentinean players and representatives from the schools at Laurak Bat and Gure Echea in Buenos Aires.  It was also an opportunity to honor Jose Roque Alfieri and Elbio Liberatore, past glories who still cheer for, and whose daily presence fills the Circulo Sportivo with life.

Salto, Uruguay.  On October 10-12 there were two extremely important events in the city of Salto, Uruguay, attended by representatives from the world of Basque pelota in the area as well as from Buenos Aires.

Invited by the Circulo Sportivo, the Salto Basque club, the Panathlon Club and the local municipality, Argentinean players and their followers from Laurak Bat and Gure Echea in Buenos Aires attended the opening of a pelota school in Salto that also teaches Xare.  The school was named after Dr. Nelson Vigo who was a World Xare runner up in 1952.  The school will be located in the Circulo Sportivo in the Uruguayan city, known as the cathedral of Xare and the cradle of great pelotaris like Nelson Vigo himself, Jose Pereira Lucas, Ariel Arralde, Cesar Galan Pose, Jose Roque Alfieri and Elbio Liberatore, among others, all with international achievements.

In conjunction with the school’s opening there was also a tribute to pelotaris Jose Roque Alfieri and Elbio Liberatore, two renowned figures in the world of Basque pelota who are still linked to the Circulo Sportivo.  Throughout the weekend there were also talks and workshops to learn how to play Xare, reconnecting with the old local artisans who provided an exhibit that was attended by Horacio Rodriquez (from the Gualeguay Pelota Club in Entre Rios), Nicolas Anabria, Roberto Elias and Pablo Ubierna (Gure Echea and Laurak Bat in Buenos Aires).

Members of the Basque club in Concordia (Entre Rios, Argentina) were also in attendance who will repeat the get together in November in hopes of opening a second Xare school in the region.

Those in charge of the Project for the diffusion of Eskuz and Xare want to especially thank Adela Soto Zudaire from the Salto Basque club – Saltoko Euskaldunen Taldea, Jose Roque Alfieri from the Circulo Sportivo and Eduardo Laffitte Ximenez from the Panathlon Club in Salto for their “excellent welcome” and to Patxi Etchevers Rosas from the Concordia Basque club for his “tireless efforts and determination to work in favor of Xare in his city.”
