Gernika, Bizkaia. Today, April 26th, commemorates the 82nd anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, recognized by Basque communities all over the world. In Gernika citizens and authorities from Gernika and Euskadi will join those from across the country in commemorating the date. The city of Gernika will open some of the refuges used during the attack in 1937, and will also award the XV Gernika Prizes for Peace and Reconciliation, one of which will go to researcher, Xabier Irujo.
A Basque from the Diaspora, historian Xabier Irujo (Caracas, Venezuela 1967), Director of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, knows the Bombing closely having researched and published profusely on the subject an he is one of the award recipients. In the honor, he is accompanied by the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, and Hispanist Paul Preston and Professor Emeritus, Angel Viñas from the Complutense University.
Journalist Mikel Ayestaran will be awarded the George Steer/Gernika Prize for Peace Journalism.
The day in Gernika will conclude with a silent march at 9pm to the Lagizarren Enparantza, Plaza of the Fueros.
