The Mexico City Basque club held a very-well deserved homage to women who have served as the pillars of the club for more than 100 years on the other side of the ocean. The festivities, organized by women, only for women, were a time to remember the pioneers, celebrate the current ones and welcome the new generations.
Mexico City, Mexico. Nearly 100 women participated in the “Emakume Alai” festivities on November 28 that took place at the Mexico City Basque Club. The event gathered women in order to honor them and to celebrate all of the women who contributed to the daily running of the Basque club with their effort.
The idea to organize the event came from Itxaropen Palacios, who was accompanied by the enthusiastic collaboration of Miren Aguirre and Itziar Urquiola. They, and many women, supported the idea of honoring the women in the club immediately. “It was a party that included much joy and many memories of those who have been a part of the club since its beginning,” Itxaropen told EuskalKultura.com.
During the tribute, Itziar Urquiola was in charge of remembering all of the women who have participated in the life of the club, one of the most emotional moments of the event. In addition, there was a photo presentation of the women who have passed through the club over time and “who have left a mark, culturally, politically and by their extraordinary altruism,” Palacios explained.
