Buenos Aires, Argentina. This was to be the first massive Basque event of this part of the year in Argentina, and it has been canceled. Hours after President Alberto Fernandez announced the extension of the quarantine until April 12th, the Laurak Bat Basque Club made the official announcement that “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” would be postponed. This huge festival that was to take place on Sunday May 10th, is part of the city’s calendar, and establishing a new date will depend on the options available to the city. (see the communication, here).
The president of Laurak Bat, Arantxa Anitua, spoke to EuskalKultura.eus explaining that the expense to the Basque club by the event’s cancellation has yet to be determined. “There was a lot of uncertainty and we wanted to bring some certainty to the community. We will evaluate the losses, which will be minimal compared to the gain of the peace of mind gained by carrying out our institutional responsibility,” she asserted.
Anitua added that the club had been called upon by the City's government, along with other communities, to attend to the needs that are arising in this health crisis. “We are evaluating what is the best way to contribute to the solidarity network that is being put together with other communities,” Anitua said.
