On June 12th, former director and professor emeritus of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, William Douglass, gave a lecture in Havana on Basque culture. The event is one of the many planned by the Basque-Navarrese Charitable Association in Havana. It is committed to revitalization and has already planned various activities for the coming weeks. For example, on July 6th, there will be an event to celebrate San Fermin, and later in July, there will be a trip for members to the province of Matanzas; a area with a strong Basque historical presence.

Havana, Cuba. On June 12th Dr. William A. Douglass gave a talk entitled, “Basques in English Speaking America and Australia.” The event took place at the College of San Geronimo at the University of Havana with the support of the city’s Historical Office.  Nearly 50 people attended the lecture that shared opinions and information with the professor from the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.  In addition, many questions regarding Basque ancestors in the North American and Australian territories were answered.

After the talk in Havana, the Basque club is planning on carrying out a series of events as part of their program of revitalizing the club.  On July 6th, as part of the San Fermin festivities, there will be a celebration (without bulls); and later on in the month, taking advantage of the summer weather, the club is sponsoring a trip for members who would like to go on an excursion to the province of Matanzas, to visit the places where there used to be important Basque settlements.
