Santiago, Chile. New issue of Berriketari, a bulletin edited in Santigo by Maria Angelica Carrasco. Remember that Eusko Etxea of the Chilean capital city is celebrating its centennial this year. Last June the Director of Foreign Relations of the Basque Government, Ainhoa Alday, visited Santiago, as did the Commissioner of Human Rights Jesus Loza as part of an institutional mini-tour of the Andean republic. On June 25, they had a meeting with the delegate of the Basque Government for Chile and Peru, Ana Urchueguia, and on Tuesday had lunch with the Santiago Basque club’s board of directors at their new restaurant, Donosti, at the club’s headquarters on Vicuña Mackenna 547.

The historian from Donostia, Juan Mari Garate Ibarrola, also visited the club. He is researching, along with Francisco Mellen and Jose Manuel Alonso, the life of Domingo Bonetxea who was born in Getaria, Gipuzkoa in 1711. Bonetxea died in Tahiti in 1775 and it is said that he was buried with a large treasure. Legend or reality? The research done by Garate and his companions seems to definitely clear up the mystery.
Berriketari also talks about the mass in honor of Saint Valentin of Berriotxoa, the patron saint of the Basque choir in Chile. Additionally, a text by historian Pedro J. Oiarzabal reflects on Santiago’s Eusko Etxea’s centennial. Finally, Berriketari summons members and friends to attend the upcoming Basque club celebration of St. Ignacio to be held on July 29. This event is one of the most popular in the club and this year will be even more special due to its centennial celebration.
