Vasca is located in the Punta Carretas neighborhood of the capital city and has the capacity for 60 guests. It menu includes tortilla, mussel croquettes and pork loin (solomo) on “Vasca” bread, but also includes vegetarian options that complete their offerings whose main objective is to fuse Basque, Spanish and Uruguayan cooking.
Montevideo, Uruguay. Without a doubt, gastronomy is one of the main expressions of the Basque culture in Euskal Herria as well as in the Diaspora. An endless number of restaurants now offer a typical menu to Basques who are disseminated all over the world, as well as for those who wish to discover the flavors of the Basque menu.
Montevideo now has a new place to enjoy these dishes, a tapa and pintxo bar that hopes to provide “the best food from the peninsula” on the banks of the La Plata River. That is how Federico Perez, Chef and Partner in “Vasca,” explains it, “the idea is to open a restaurant with these characteristics in Montevideo to have something new in the city, since at the time, there were few tapa bars here. We were looking for a “tapeo” format, that exists in Uruguay as “picada” and we wanted to give it a special touch. The proposal was very well-received and since our inauguration, the response has been spectacular, and so we may be looking at opening more sites in the future.”
Perez explains that he especially researched Basque cuisine to include on the menu like tortilla, croquettes, and a large variety of pintxos. But they also offer tumaca bread, broth of the fish of the day called “marinel” and vegetarian dishes among other options. “Since the beginning, the idea was to fuse Basque, Spanish and Uruguayan cooking,” Perez explains.
“Vasca” is located on Miñones 455 in the neighborhood of Punta Carretas in Montevideo, and is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 7pm, Saturdays all day and Sunday at noon. The restaurant is on Facebook here: Vasca and is also available for reservations.
