New York, New York . This Sunday there will be a Basque event Sunday in New York City, Txikifest, or the Txakoli celebration is an annual event organized by the Txikito Basque Restaurant in Manhattan managed by chef Eder Montero, from Bilbao, and his wife, New York Chef Alex Raij. The event is in the Basque style where a street is dedicated to booths where people will be servedi. Beverages will be served along with pintxos and small plates, for an admission fee with all proceeds going to a social cause, this year to the Esperanza Association NY
The event will also include an aizkolari exhibition and other rural sports by the team from the New England Basque Club. It will also include tasting of the three Txakoli regions of Araba, Bizkaia and Getaria. The collaboration of the Provincial Government of Bizkaia will also allow attendees to enter raffles for a trip to Bizkaia; and other well-known New York restaurants like Casa Publica and the Neoyorquina will provide pintxos and small plates for tasting as well.
Txikito, that is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year, a period that few restaurants endure in the competitive New York City market. Tcikito is is the flagship of the fleet comprised of four restaurants owned by Eder Montero and Alex Raij, in Manhattan: Txikito and El Quinto Pino, and in Brooklyn: La Vara and Saint Julivert, each of them endowed with a culinary personality of their own. This fact has recently been recognized with its nomination among the finalists in the James Beard Foundation Awards, in the category of restauration, reserved for hospitality groups with more than 10 years of experience.
