After the successful first experience in 2015, the “Uruguaiko Euskara Ikasleak – Basque Students of Uruguay” returned to the beaches of Santa Lucia del Este for the second “Asteburupasa,” an entire Basque speaking weekend for students and teachers. Sponsored by FIVU, the group enjoyed three days immersed in Euskera and the Basque culture thanks to irakasles, Andrea Bella and Martin Zabalza.
Montevideo, Uruguay. The Basque Weekend organized by the Uruguaiko Euskara Ikasleak, took place September 23-25, at Santa Lucia del Este. The event, that aims to spend three days in an Euskaldun ambience, gathered in its second edition 20 students from San Jose and Montevideo as well as a group of four txikis.
The event began on Friday and after the Uruguayan flag and the Ikurrina were raised and lodging assigned, the students and teachers shared lunch with each Student introducing themselves to the teachers Andrea Bella and Martin Zabalza, with t-shirts and neckerchiefs also being distributed. The main promoter of the activity, Andrea Bella, told EuskalKultura.com that in order to create ambience and “facilitate the students exchanges, Basque words and phrases were stuck on the walls and the shared spaces.”
The weekend’s program included workshops in cooking and music. Students and teachers prepared and shared their meals, and every day there were outings, games, songs and conversation around the fire. In the words of Andrea Bella,” all the participants were very happy with the experience, and with our idea of continuing “Asteburupasa.” We will have a meeting soon with teachers to start work on next year’s event.”
