Donostia-San Sebastián. This Wednesday is San Sebastian Day, the traditional day of the Tamborrada celebration in Donostia. This year, in the middle of a pandemic, it is strange, with mobility restrictions, curfews, and the festivities, as we know them, canceled in Donostia, although Tamborrada lives and beats in those who live and feel it every year. The hope of recovering the celebration as it was “before” survives and gives us strength as soon as COVID-19 is overcome.
The majority of the Tamborradas have also been canceled in the Diaspora. In Necochea, Argentina, they canceled the larger program and its children’s Tamborrada, one of the largest events at this Basque club, but they did maintain the raising of the flag and an adult Tamborrada outside the clubhouse with masks and social distancing. In other places around the world where it is a deeply rooted tradition, events won’t be held.
But we need to keep practicing because this is till ere conjecture. The festivities are within us, this year too, we have to carry it out and carry the torch to future editions. This is why we brought here the Tamborrada tutorial that FEVA (the Argentine federation of Basque entities) has shared on Facebook. The Basque-Argentine drummer directors José Gutiérrez and Jorge Rabuffetti from the Laurak Bat Basque club explain how to play the six main pieces that are part of the Sarriegi repertoire of your and our festivities, from the Diaspora. Eskerrik asko eta Gora Donostia!
