The event was held at the Basque club and was attended by the current board of directors, and former presidents of the club, the Delegate of the Basque Government in Argentina, Sara Pagola, and Dr. Alberto Maiztegui, who received a touching tribute. The event ended afternoon with a presentation by the Cordobatarrak dance group; the festivities however, continued with lunch and a toast.
Cordoba, Argentina. Founded in 1954, the Gure Txokoa Basque club in the city of Cordoba has reached its 60th anniversary and celebrated not only with members and friends but also with former presidents of the club, and other representative community figures. Specially invited by the club, the Delegate of Euskadi, Sara Pagola, also attended. She transmitted a greeting from Lehendakari Urkullu on this very significant date for the Basque club and exchanged gifts with club president, Alejo Martin.
The club’s birthday celebration took place on August 18th at noon and opened with an Aurresku and welcoming remarks. Alejo Martin referred to the importance of the anniversary and made special mention of the board of directors that work alongside him. Following Pagola and Martin uncovered a painting with images of the presidents of the “60th Anniversary” and presented a diploma to each one of them (or to a family member) as well as to members of the current board. Among those mentioned, the club also gave special recognition to Anamari Unsain de Saenz and Rosa Maria Irazusta de Bengoechea “for their permanent work and unmeasured dedication to the Basque community of Cordoba.”
Tribute to Dr. Alberto Maiztegui
Also as part of the 60th Anniversary, Gure Txokoa honored a professor and doctor in Physics who is the current president of the National Academy of Sciences, Alberto Maiztegui, who was present with his family. Former club president, Jorge Saenz, was in charge of saying a few words about him and his career. He presented Maiztegui a plaque. Delegate Sara Pagola also participated in the tribute with two gifts. During his speech, Maiztegui thanked everyone for the honor and shared stories with those present “about pleasant moments spent at the Basque club.”
Closure, dancing and lunch
Concluding the official acts, the club also presented a gift to Mariana Satostegui, secretary at the Delegation of the Basque Government in Argentina, “for her work in the Delegation and her willingness to serve the entire Argentine Diaspora in the area she is responsible for” and then the club dantzaris, the Cordobatarrak, provided a finale full of music and dance. The anniversary celebration continued with lunch specially prepared by the club cooks and an allusive toast.
