Montevideo, Uruguay. After a successful first edition in 2018, the sociolinguist experiment called Euskaraldia will hold its second edition at the end of the year. Its organizers explain that “despite the current limitations to mobility and getting together the second edition will be held as planned on November 20th through December 4th. We want to make it clear that we will carry out this social exercise to shake up our linguist customs and consolidate our advancement.”
“Euskaraldia” is based on a role-playing game that is carried out in Euskal Herria promoting the use of each person’s Basque knowledge. Each person chooses to be Ahobizi (speaker) or Belarriprest (listener) making each role know with a badge or a pin. In this way, the interlocutor is given a club about the language they can use in the dialogue. Now, to start warming up for the second edition, organizers have launched a new proposal:
“Etxealditik Euskaraldira” (from confinement to Euskaraldia)
The proposal includes three phases. “In this exceptional situation that we currently find ourselves in it is an invitation to optimize our communication in Basque, from home, using more Euskera with more people and in more situations,” they explain. The activity has two main goals: to support reflection on our linguist customs and to support the use of the Basque language. For this, they will provide various means and proposals.
The first phase began last Monday with the project’s presentation. The second ran Tuesday through Thursday, with exercises to reflect about our linguistic practices, and the third will begins today, Friday April 24th and will run through the April 30th. The third phase will be carried out on social media, beginning with the dissemination of slogans to promote the use of Basque in everyday life. The initiative will end on May 3rd with a virtual and collective event.
It is easy to participate from the Diaspora since slogans will be published on Euskaraldia’s social media. Anyone wishing to participate can share videos, or photos taken on social media as they do the various slogans always through @euskaraldia and using the #EtxealditikEuskaraldira
Euskaraldia on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
