On April 26, 1937 Nazi aviators attacked the Bizkaian village of Gernika, razing most of the city with their bombs and causing 126 fatalities. The massacre became a universal symbol of horror and denunciation of the war – in large part thanks to the master work “Guernica” by Picasso. In this spirit the event is remembered in many places around the world, especially in the Basque Diaspora for whom this date has always been charged with emotion and symbolism. We’ll start our journey through these various activities with the inauguration of the exhibit entitled “The Bombing of Gernika 75 Anniversary” in Mexico City that is being attended by the director of Relations with Basque Collectivities Abroad, Julian Celaya.

Mexico City, Mexico.  The Basque Diaspora will remember the victims of the Bombing of Gernika today and in the days to come, as it celebrates the 75 anniversary of this event.  We have heard about various activities planned and will provide a short summary of them that will take place today and in the near future.  We are starting in Mexico City where the director of Relations with Basque Collectivities Abroad, Julian Celaya, finds himself to attend the inauguration of an exhibit on the bombing that can be seen at the Basque club until June 17.  The event will begin at 19:00.  Similar exhibits are also opening today in Buenos Aires, Santiago and Bogota; and tomorrow in Brussels and Cuenca (Ecuador).  Complete information here.

In Berlin, the Basque club is holding a commemorative event at the Gernika Plaza in the German capital at the same hour that the bombing took place.  Churches in the area will also ring their bells in unison in memory of victims of the attack.  From Luneburg, Germany, Isa Marin let us know about commemorative events taking place at the local university with students there conducting a study on the tragedy.  The university will be the site for a talk entitled, “The Gernika-Luneburg Connection.”  Events will continue with an exhibit on the bombing today and tomorrow, and will conclude on May 19 with a talk by Maria Oianguren, director of Gernika Gogoratuz.  In London, the London Basque Society will gather at its headquarters in Bethnal Green at 19:00 to pay their respects to those who died in the bombings.

Other activities that are detailed in our agenda take place in different places in Argentina such as General Rodriguez, Arrecifes, and Resistencia, in Rome, Lima and Asuncion (Paraguay) and in Carabobo Venezuela.  Tomorrow, Basque clubs in Rosario, Argentina will join in, and the day after, the Basque club Zingirako Euskaldunak in Chascomus.  It is worth noting that several Basque clubs included commemorative events as part of their Aberri Eguna celebrations.

The tragedy will also be remembered on Twitter, an original initiative on the part of Eitb.com and Gernika Gogoratuz.
