Houston, Texas is the fourth largest city in the US. Iñigo Iraola, from Hernani, is a telecommunications engineer there and is part of the legion of people form other parts of the states, or world, who have moved to the city to study or work, including a few Basques. “I know that there are fifteen in my area who have come like me, to study or work and sometimes we get together to go out, or just visit,” he says.

In November, for example, they got together and it was a good experience to share some time and know each other. “We went to a have dinner at a Mexican Restaurant, and then went to have a drink and talk with some of us staying late.” There were nearly twenty of them, including some French and Spanish friends Iraola said.
The majority of the people who live in Houston do so temporarily, and that is why there isn’t a Basque club, along with the fact that there aren’t enough Basque-Americans either, from other states, yet in Houston, he says.
Iraola has been in Houston for a year and a half, and even though he has some friends that have started to settle in, he is sure that “most of the people come and go from here.” Among the Basque corporation highlights the local authority has decided to reform the train and tram system and has awarded the contract to the Basque company CAF from Beasain, Gipuzkoa.
Economically speaking, our interviewee says that Texas is in a boom and that there are many job opportunities in the city. He recently finished his degree and now with diploma in hand is looking for a job that will allow him to work and stay in the country.
