Pergamino, Argentina. “Because there are no eggs!” was the theme and trigger phrase of the 8th International Bilbao Aste Nagusia 2020 Narrative Contest, and it was a writer from Argentina, Hernan Digilio, from Pergamino in the Province of Buenos Aires with his story The Life of Dogs that won the “‘Premio Plaza Nueva Idazleak’ new writers prize,” in the best free form story,” category. According to Digilio in a conversation with EuskalKultura.eus The Life of Dogs tells the story of Bilbao, in which Basque is not lacking, but with the recreation of an underworld in which a prison language abounds, “which traps the reader in the ambiguity of not knowing if the story takes place in jail, or in a kennel
Contest awards included the “Baldosa de Bilbo” and the Anthology with winning texts and selections from 2020 presented on August 31st. Unable to attend in person, and at the request of the Lagun Onak Basque Club of Pergamino, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu, the Basque Government’s Director of the Basque Community Abroad accepted the awards on his behalf and read a message that Digilio wrote for the occasion.

This is not the first time that Digilio has stood out in a Bilbao Aste Nagusia Contest (see information here). “This is a very proud achievement for me as someone from Pergamino and as an Argentinean since the competition is fierce and truly international. In addition, I am personally very happy being so far away and still being recognized…this means that I have researched well and that I have also learned what I have learned well, and that I really like Basque,” Digilio concluded.
