Vitoria-Gasteiz. Liburuklik promises to be an important took for researchers and scholars of Basque culture since they will now be able to Access the Basque Digital Library and many of the documents and books that were published in the Basque Country prior to 1940. Liburuklik provides centralized access to other institutions’ holdings as well, for example the holdings of the the Basque Parliament’s library, the Provincial Government of Alava’s library and those of the Sancho el Sabio Foundation. In this way Liburuklik strives to become a means of preservation and dissemination of the Basque bibliographic heritage.
Until now Liburuklik offers access to approximately 3,000 titles and 350,000 images with an additional 300,000 pages ready to be included by the end of the year. The oldest documents include two manuscripts from 1458 and 1476. The archive is limited to works published prior to 1940, as not to violate authors’ rights. Nevertheless, it will also include more recent works if authors give their permission to do so.
How to use Liburuklik
Liburuklik is based on DSpace, a software platform designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and HP Labs. This platform allows users to use a powerful search engine to access the contents by searching by title, author, date, topic etc.
In this system the different sections are organized as communities. Following are the communities that currently exist (just click on one of them and search for the title that you’d like):
Anyone wishing to use Liburuklik may do so as a guest or by registering on the website. The second options will enable you to receive email notifications of new documents added to the archive.
