Santa Barbara, CA. The University of California-Santa Barbara (UCSB) has taught classes on Basque language and culture for years: an area of Basque studies that is developing nicely under the direction of Dr. Viola Miglio. Today, with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute, the center also includes a Basque language and culture lectureship.
Over the next two days, Basque studies will be featured during the Comparative Iberian Studies Symposium being celebrated at USBC, that will include a talk by the director of the Promotion of Euskera from the Etxepare Basque Institute, Mari Jose Olaziregi, entitled, “Iberian Studies Within/Beyond the Peninsula: The Current Situation and Desiderata.”
Following, as part of the “Basque Studies” panel other presenters will participate including Diana Palenzuela, Unai Nafarrate, and the Basque-Californian expert Begoña Echeverria. Echeverria is also one of the members of the Basque musical trio Noka who will also perform a concert to close the symposium.
The program for the Basque Studies panel that will take place the day after tomorrow:
