Starting today, Semana Vasca will be celebrated in Paraguay through Thursday the 30th with a program that includes placing a plaque in the San Jose College, founded in the 19th Century by the Betharram Basque priests, called “Bayoneses”. Invited guests who will also give talks include Sara Pagola, Delegate of Euskadi in Argentina and Mercorsur, and Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com.
Asuncion, Paraguay. Organized by the local Jasone Basque club, the Semana Vasca Asunceña 2014 begins today in the Paraguayan capital. According to Jose Maria Bruno Lacarra, club president, the club has worked despite of its economic challenges as they rely on a good response from the media, the Basque community and authorities, along with Paraguayan public.
The program will be attended amon others by Sara Pagola, the Delegate of Euskadi for Mercosur headquartered in Buenos Aires. Pagola will travel with Mariana Satostegui also from the same office. Also coming from abroad is Joseba Etxarri, director of EuskalKultura.com.
Here is the week’s program provided by the club. Guests coming from the outside will carry out meetings with local and national representatives from the administration as well as the world of culture.
Day one, Monday October 27
- Placement of the plaque in honor of the Pioneer priests at the College of San Jose in Asuncion, founded by Basque priests called “Bayoneses,” from the order of Betharram founded by Saint Michel Garikoitz.
Day two, Tuesday October 28
- Tribute to the Tree of Gernica, artistic sculpture representing Basque events, located in on Basque Country Street in the city of Asuncion where there is also a sapling of the aforementioned tree.
Day three, Wednesday October 29
- Dinner-show in the Hall of Mirrors at the Hotel Guarani, with a show and typical Basque food, 8:30pm.
Day four, Thursday October 30
- Talk by Sara Pagola, Basque Government Delegate in Argentina and Mercosur
- Talk by Joseba Etxarri, Director of EuskalKultura.com
- Tribute to Dr. Manuel Marcos, President of the University of the North for his translation of the literary work El invierno by Günter into Basque
