Donostia-San Sebastian. “Euskaraldia” is a social exercise to favor the change of the linguistic habits of those who understand or speak some Basque, but due to inertia, determined contexts, etc. do now use that knowledge that this tries to activate. The first edition took place in 2018 and due to its success; this year’s event will be longer and will extend the possibility to Basques in Basque communities abroad to participate.
The 2020 edition, is using the motto “Gehiago, gehiagorekin, gehiagotan,” (More, with more (people), in more (situations)). Included in the registration are not just the traditional territories of Euskal Herria but also the Diaspora when it comes to specifying from where they will participate.
Euskaraldia will take place November 20-December 4th and each participate will choose to either be an ahobizi (live mouth), or a belarriprest (a ready ear). Whoever plays the ahobizi role will try to communicate in Basque as much as possible, and whoever signs up to be the belarriprest will try to understand and put his/her “passive knowledge” of Basque to work even if they do not speak it in all cases into use. The minimum requirement for this role is to try their best. You can choose when you want to try or can speak Basque, and you will explicitly ask to be spoken to in Basque, even if your responde is not in Basque.
Besides the roles of ahobizi and belarriprest, during the exercise there will also be arigunes, that is to say places where the possibility of communicating in Basque permanently is guaranteed.
