The National Sun Festival is one of the main opportunities that the Eusko Etxea in San Juan has in the foothills of the Andes, to present in front of a massive crowd. That is why club members work hard to adequately represent the Basque Country at this mega event. This year’s showing responded to the motto “The Basques’ Passion for Music,” and besides fandangos and traditional dances also brought with it the Argentine passion to pay tribute to their ancestors.
San Juan, Argentina. The National Sun Festival took place on February 24-27 and gathered nearly 470,000 people according to official sources. The program took place at May Park and gathered first-rate artists, closing with the classic “Carousel of the Sun.”
The event concluded with a massive parade with the slogan “Argentine Passions,” that was reflected in the floats that included soccer, among other sports, but also, music, dance and other local interests. Festival queen candidates also participated in the parade.
The local Basque club didn’t miss the opportunity and participated in the huge festival that included their passions, but in this case, associated with the Basques. “Coordinated by Silvia Urbicain de Bene, club secretary, a float in the form of a ship was built with a dais in front so the dancers could dance. So as the float advanced and was cheered by the public along the route, the dancers continued to dance,” Carina Oyola Alvarez told EuskalKultura.com.
The San Juan Basque club takes advantage of the opportunity given it by EuskalKultura.com to thank everyone who made the event possible for their hard work and collaboration, especially the “Wapa” dance institute where the dancers are trained; and also Pablo Varela who created the float’s design.
