Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The event finally arrived last Friday, April 16th the date when the Battle Mountain Chamber of Commerce announced and presented its 2021 awards recipients. In the “Roots Leadership” category, the popular vote decided who the winner would be among the five finalists and that was…the Oberenak Basque Club. Club representative, Shirley (Satica) Shepherd relayed the club’s appreciation to everyone who voted for them as well as thanking their members, and collaborators, and of course the Chamber of Commerce for organizing the event to EuskalKultura.eus.
The award ceremony took place on Friday and included a dinner gala at the local Civic Center where living forces of Battle Mountain were represented.
Founded in 1997, the Oberenak Basque Club was created in Battle Mountain to maintain, cultivate and spread the culture and Basque legacy historically rooted in this part of Nevada. The Euskaletxeak website states that it was recognized by the Basque Government that same year, and according to NABO’s website, joined the federation in 1999.
The main activity of the club revolves around the children and newest generations. The club has a dance group that practices regularly, having resumed in person practices recently since the pandemic, and it enjoys a family atmosphere quality. It organizes events and Basque celebrations and its dantzaris participate in Basque events in other places in the West. It is an active member of NABO.
Megan (Lenz) Hernandez is the club’s current president with Maite (Narvaiza) Kovis serving as vice-president, Shirley (Satica) Shepherd secretary/treasurer, and Johanna Reeves as NABO delegate.
Zorionak, Oberenak!
