Donostia-San Sebastian. 62.8% of the Basque population has some knowledge of Euskera meaning that this number has increased by 3.3 points between 2006 and 2011. Three out of four people in Gipuzkoa know Basque, while three out of five in Bizkaia and one out of two in Araba according to EUSTAT in its “Census of Population and Housing 2011.”
This study reflects that the number of Basque speakers has increased in five years to more than 14,400 people, while those classified as “quasi-euskaldunak” number almost 82,600. The “quasi-Basque speakers” are those who understand the language well even though they have difficulty in expressing themselves orally. Donostia-San Sebastian is the only capital with an increase in Basque speakers and also “quasi-Basque speakers,” while Bilbao has suffered a decline in the number of euskaldunak and an increase in the number of “quasi-euskaldunak.” In Vitoria-Gasteiz the percentage of Euskaldunak has decreased but the number of “quasi-euskaldunak” increasing (22.5% and 26.1% respectively).
Could you kindly give me the more detailed information concerning number/proportion of Basque speakers in Bilbao? Thank you, Leos Satava
