Rome, Italy. Basque film with be showcased in Rome thanks to the Basque Films Series organized by the Associazione Culturale Euskara in collaboration with the cultural venue Spazioxygene. The inauguration of the series will take place this afternoon, with the screening of Lasa eta Zabala. The feature-length film directed by Pablo Malo, from Donostia, is a thriller that treats the abduction and disappearance of Basque refugees, Joxean Lasa and Joxi Zabala.
The second segment will take place on the 25th of the month and instead of showing a new film, a crowd favorite will be returning with Loreak. The Basque club had previously shown this film at last year’s Basque Week, but it is returning at the audience’s request.
Roman viewers are not misguided since the film debuted at the International Film Festival in Donostia in 2014, and since then has won several awards, and has had great reviews at festivals like the GFI London Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival and at the Tokyo International Film Festival to name a few. The film is directed by Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga, and was the first film in Basque to receive an Oscar nomination.
The series will close on the 26th with a special screening of Basque shorts from Laburbira, a traveling selection of shorts in Basque. The next Basque Week will take place December 1-11th, following the film series.
All of the film events will take place at the Spazioxygenen (Via San Tommaso D'Aquino 11a – Metro A Cipro). There will be an aperitif before every film at 6:30 with the films beginning at 8pm.
