Liverpool, England. This year, the Manuel Irujo Chair, supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute at the University of Liverpool will discuss the career of Joaquín de Eguia Unzueta under the title “From Bilbao to Liverpool: A Basque Sea Captain’s Journey through Times of Peace, Conflict and Exile.” His own daughter, Miren de Eguia (John Moores University in Liverpool), will talk about Joaquin de Eguia this Wednesday March 20th at 3pm at the Theatre 5, in the Rendall building at the university.
The life of Captain Eguia, totally changed after the Spanish Civil War when he became the head of the Basque Navy. Arrantzale by profession, he fought in the Basque Navy until June 1939, when Bilbao fell and he had to scape to France, Ireland and later England. He fought in World War II as part of the Royal Air Force.
