Buenos Aires, Argentina. This year, due to the pandemic, the 46th edition of the Buenos Aires Book Fair has been cancelled. The Fair is attended annually by the Basque-Argentine Juan de Garay Foundation that has now announced that it will hold the first Virtual Basque International Book Fair in Buenos Aires. The fair will begin on December 1st and will run for two weeks, including a complete program of activities, online and in some cases synchronously, the Foundation said.
They hope to present the virtual fair in Euskera, Spanish, English and French and invited all Euskal Etxeas and Navarrese clubss around the world to participate. “The idea is that institutions can participate as exhibitors, those that publish books, produce contents, videos, interviews, participating in chats…to diffuse their activity and enjoy the proposal,” spokesperson, Jorge Beramendi said.
The fair will include several stands that will appear on screen, each exhibitor will have its own catalogue and visitors can fill their carts, and pay online having their orders delivered to their homes.
The Foundation explains that each of the four languages of the Fair will have a director. the English section will be run by Chris Carpenter, member of the Foundation and American, who will be in charge of clubs that speak English, and will be the link with the University of Nevada, Reno, while preparing an activity about Basques and the independence of the United States. They are still working on finding two people to be in charge of the Basque and the French section.
Calling all Basque Clubs
In the words of Jorge Beramendi, “The main thing is to try to link the Basque centers horizontally with each other to get to know each other and that everyone can buy books that bring them closer to Basques. It is perhaps an ambitious trial, but we believe that communication channels must be south and new technologies allow for that. There are about 52 million Basques in the Diaspora…A Basques is an enterprising person, tenacious in what he sets out to do and hard working. This activity wants to be a reflection of these concepts,” he concluded.
