With activities that included the general public, and others that are aimed more for the Basque community, the Saladillo Basque club enjoys a strong relationship with the city. In the month of June, the traditional celebration of San Juan responds to an initiative that unites the club with the city and the neighborhood school where the Basque club resides. Aimed more at Basque club members, the Mus Championship was held last Friday with Hector Altamira and Santiago Santamarina to represent the club at the national tournament in Chacabuco.
Saladillo, Argentina. Last Friday, the local Mus Tournament was held at the Itxaropen Basque Club to determine the team that would represent the club in Chacabuco on June 16-18 at the national tournament. Winners were Hector Eduardo Altamira and Santiago Santamarina, with Nicolas Calabrese and Antonio Fanesi coming in second.
From Mus to Film
There is no secret to keeping the Basque club vital: maybe there are a few keys including presenting activities for all taste. That is why Itxaropen organized a mus tournament on Friday, and the weekend before they hosted the second installment of Basque film. Coordinated by Carlos Gabilondo, Traveling Film Series, came to Saladillo this time with Loreak. Some forty people attended. They enjoyed the film and pintxos after it along with lentil stew prepared by the club’s cooks. Also attending was deputy Ricardo Lissalde, who presented the cub with a flag of the Province of Buenos Aires.
Euskera, Dance, and Gastronomy
In a conversation with EuskalKultura.com, Silvia Bordenave, club reference, mentions the variety of club offerings: “We have workshops for the city, as well as those for the club. Euskera classes are taught by Paulina Lorda and dance workshops are taught by Micaela Gaggiotti. Micaela participated in the FEVA dance workshop last year and in 2017, we have an adult group and some youth, 15 dantzaris in all,” Bordenave said. In regards to gastronomy, the activity also has great support from the club. This year we have Chef Guadalupe Arocena in the kitchen. The club also plans to raise money to cover airfare for Guadalupe to the Basque Country so that she may learn more about Basque cooking. If all goes well, she’ll travel in 2018.”
Upcoming Activities
In the coming weeks the club will be pretty busy celebrating San Juan among other things. The festivities are co-organized by the club, the city and the school in the club’s neighborhood. In august the third installment of the Basque film series will take place again with Carlos Gabilondo. That event is planned for the 25th and dinner will again be provided after the movie.
“Between San Juan and the Basque Film Series we also have another important date,” Bordenave said. “In July the club will celebrate its anniversary and to do so we have organized a big lunch on the 9th coinciding with the anniversary of Argentina’s Independence Day. Later, on July 31, along with the club’s anniversary and Saladillo’s birthday, we will also enthrone an image of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. This image came to us from club members who went to Euskadi last year,” she concluded.
Dates and details of the festivities will be published as they are confirmed on Facebook: Centro Vasco Itxaropen Saladillo, as well as on EuskalKultura.com’s agenda.
