The book gathers works of participants in the International Contests “Witchcraft in the Basque Country,” in 2012, and “What Happened to a Basque,” in 2013. Comprised of some 60 short stories, the book is the first publication by the sub-commission of Culture at the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea. Attending the ceremony were authors, members of the jury as well as club board members.
Buenos Aires, Argentina. The book entitled, Anthology of the Iparraldeko Euskal Etxea from the International Contests Witchcraft in the Basque Country (2012) and What Happened to a Basque in (2013), was presented on October 24 at the clubhouse at an event that gathered the jury, board members, and some of the authors of the texts published. In fact, as explained by the organizers, “writers from Uruguay, Spain, France, Mexico, Euskal Herria, Chile, Peru and Argentina all participated in the contests, and so many could not be present.”
The ceremony included the words of the President of the Jury, accountant and writer Hector Sanjuas, who was also in charge of editing the material, Luis Paz and his wife Patricia Quintero. In addressing the public, he did a review of the book and highlighted the importance of the work “in whose pages you can read about the traditions and life of this people that constitutes very culturally rich material.”
There was also time at the event to read some of the passages from the Antholgoy. Luis Paz read the text by Mario M. Covalan Singh, El vuelo del angelito, from the first contest “What Happened to a Basque,” while Juan Carlos Ibarrola did the same with the work by Maria Josefa Setien Aramaburu from Hondarribia, and her story, Gaxuxa, form the first “Witchcraft in the Basque Country.” Marcela Viviana Espinosa shared Sorgin with the audience, Maria Delia Bellocq, Un nexo indestructible; María Rosa Torres, Aquilino Navarro; Rita Gil, El vaso plegable; and Alberto Feldman, Palabras y botellas
To conclude the ceremony, Mr. Sanjuas, thanks everyone present and stressed again the importance of the anthology as the first publication by the sub-commission of Culture. The commission, on its behalf, also highlighted its delight “now that we see all of our work over so many years in this book.” And encouraged by its success, contest organizers have already publicized the date of the 2015 Contest whose theme is “Basque Women.” The awards ceremony will take place on November 21 at 4pm at the Basque club on Moreno 1370.
