On May 3rd folks from Bariloche celebrated their city’s 115th anniversary with a big celebration that filled its streets with music and color that concluded with performances in the Municipal Velodrome.  More than 100 entities including schools, associations, movements, communities, clubs and living forces were protagonists of the evening including, as in prior celebrations a “mountain stew” for 18,000 people.  The parade and the festivities didn’t lack an Ikurriña provided by the local Mendiko Eusko Etxea Basque Club.

Bariloche, Argentina.  The city of Bariloche celebrated its 115th anniversary on May 3rd.  The events began in the morning with a civic/military parade on Onelli Street, where the authorities stage was located, and concluded in the Velodrome.  There, besides music and dance performances, a group of cooks, led by Pablo Quiven, accompanied by 8 professional chefs and 50 students from the school of cuisine, prepared a huge mountain stew for 18,000 people.

The parade included more than 100 institutions that comprise and share daily life in Bariloche, who also marched together, side by side, to the rhythm of the band from the Mountain Military School.  Among these were various European-Argentine communities that are getting ready for their big festival in November, wearing typical clothing, symbols and flags from their various areas of origin.  In the case of the Basques, Hector Graña and Luis Galarraga accompanied the club’s standard bearers.

Meeting and Dances

The Mendiko Euskal Etxea Basque Club was also present at the meeting of Patagonian Basque clubs held in Neuquen.  Not only did their representatives participate in working groups that cultivate unity of action among the clubs in the region, but its dancers also joined in by performing at the farewell dinner.

The club’s dance group, with over 30 members, also announced that it has won a spot, at the local level, and is one of the attractions at the Festival of European-Argentine Communities.  They invite anyone who would like to join them, for regular practices, held at different times, depending on the age of the dancer. Classes are held on Saturdays, for txikis from 17-18:00; and for adults from 18-19pm; youth practice from 19:30-21pm.
