Concepción del Uruguay, Argentina. On the Basque community’s initiative, along with the city government, members and friends of the Ibai Txori Basque Club planted a sapling of the Tree of Gernika in Ramirez Plaza. The ceremony took place as part of the Day of the Diaspora festivities and was attended by the local mayor, Jose Lauritto. The sapling was donated by the Zazpirak Bat Basque Club in Rosario according to club sources.
During the event, members of the club read a text written by Professor Celomar Agacha for the occasion. Among those attending were the club’s president, Carlos Izaguirre, also Lucy Arcelus, Marta Guridi, Ana Gracia, Rocío García, Analía Jumilla, Daniela Arceluz, Juana and Maite Etchecoin and Marcelo Etchecoin. Matías Giqueaux, the city’s press secretary and Jorge Urquiza, coordinator of green spaces.
The planting was initially planned for the 30th anniversary of the club in December of 2018 but because of the weather it was cancelled. This is why the club chose the Day of the Diaspora 2019 for the emotional ceremony.
