Caldas, Colombia. The president of the Gure Mendietakoak Basque Club, Oscar Urrea Aristizabal, wrote us to announced the election last weekend of “our new Queen of Colombia, my cousin Maria Fernanda Aristizabal Urrea.” Representing the region of Quindio she is 22 years old, and studying Social Communication at the Luis Amigó Catholic University. She is descendant of Basques form Hernani (Gipuzkoa) and Lekeitio (Bizkaia) who came to the country in the 17th century.
Lehendakari Urrea added, “Here, in our region that covers the departments of Antioquia, Quindio, Risaralda and Caldas that boasts the largest Basque offspring in the world. They call us the Paisa Country and we are very proud of that, for our analogy with the Basque Country."
