They are still getting organized, the Basque descendants in the city of Benito Juarez, gathered under the name Euskal Juarez, have been fulfilling their commitment with the community by representing the Basque Country this year, 2015, as in prior years at the local Festival of Communities. The event will take place on November 9 with an exhibit and on November 14 there will be a community dinner.
Benito Juarez, Argentina. Located in the southern part of the province of Buenos Aires, 400 kms. from the capital, Benito Juarez has fifteen thousand inhabitants of which a large percentage are of Basque origin. It differs from neighboring cities, like Azul, Tres Arroyos and Tandil that have large Basque clubs and a long history. Basques in this town didn’t begin organizing until 2013.
The group, although small, is becoming to gain grown in their community and become one of the main attractions at community festival that the city organizes. Called, Euskal Juarez, the group won the award for the most representative stand in 2013 and in 2014, Angie Aguirre Choque was chosen as queen of the communities, representing the Basque Country.
Besides participating in these events, members of the group usually get together in hopes of delving deeper into Basque culture. As Maria Elena Haedo explained to EuskalKultura.com, “we are few, but we try to get together regularly and organize events like the community festival. Last year was also began teaching Basque with a member of the group that studied in Tandil. He taught us what he know. Now, for personal reasons, we have had stop, but we haven’t given up the idea of starting again. In the meantime, we are working on our stand for the Festival of Communities,” Haedo said.
Upcoming dates include November 9-14, at the Exhibition, where representatives of each culture will present elements of their individual cultures to each other. The exhibit will take place in the Reading Hall in the Library. Also on November 14, there will be a Community Dinner, at the Sociedad Española.
