Bilbo, Bizkaia. Continuing his visit to Euskadi, Governor Brad Little, in his first visit abroad since taking office in January, accompanied by his wife and a delegation from Idaho that arrived in Bilbao on Sunday, visited the headquarters of Athletic this afternoon, accompanied by the Deputy General (president) of Bizkaia, Unai Rementeria and the soccer club’s president, Aitor Elizegi. Along with them, others from the Provincial Government of Bizkaia such as the Deputy of Culture, Lorea Bilbao, and the delegation that accompanies the Governor on his visit. The Governor was welcomed on Monday at the Palace of the Provincial Government by Unai Rementeria and today at noon will be welcomed by Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
In line with the trip, the Basque media has repeated the plans for Athletic to go to Boise and the US next summer, during Jaialdi 2020. Heading up this project are teams on both sides of the Atlantic and among the questions to be answered, is the name of Athletic’s opponent. Four years ago it was a team from the Mexican League, the Xolos from Tijuana, and this time other possibilities are being investigated. One of the proposals is the possibility of a derby in Boise between Athletic and Real Sociedad, as part of the enormous Basque atmosphere that Boise will experience during Jaialdi.
The last edition of Boise's Jaialdi, a tremendous Basque festival, possibly the largest in the world outside the boundaries of the European Basque Country, was four years ago, meaning that next Jaialdi will be next year, in July-August 2020. In 2015, Brad Little, at that time, Lt. Governor of Idaho, welcomed and had meetings there with Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and Deputy General Unai Rementeria, each one of them leading their respective institutional delegations.
