The Provincial Government of Bizkaia presents a selection of publications published at the end of the 19th century by the Basque community in exile. A chapter of our past that invites reflection on this time when migration flows are a topic of conversation. The resources exhibited include Basque publications from Europe and Latin America that can be seen until October 31 at the Provincial Library in Bilbao. We offer a sample in pdf format.
Bilbao, Bizkaia. Last week, on October 3rd an exhibit Basque Diaspora Publications opened its doors in the Main Room at the Provincial Government of Bizkaia, Bizkaiko Foru Aldundia. The exhibit includes publications done by Basques in exile in Europe and Latin America at the end of the 19th century.
The proposed route begins at the end of the 19th century and places us in the region of the La Plata River, and in Havana, Cuba. It is not a coincidence that this is the place and the time that entities that are considered to be the oldest euskal etxeas emerge in the world, like in the case of Laurac Bat in Montevideo; Laurak Bat in Buenos Aires, in Argentina; the Basque-Navarre Charity Association in Havana, Cuba: the last two are still active.
Among the titles exhibited, Laurak Bat in Montevideo; Laurak Bat in Buenos Aires; and Laurac Bat in Havana; along with them Euskal Erria, La Baskonia, Aintzina, Herria, Euzko Deya, Gernika, Euzko Gogoa... and many more.
Anyone wishing to take a look can do so here in the exhibit’s guide book.
The exhibit will be open on a daily basis:
